DANGER
Beware of the claims of companies selling chemical
Curtain Cleaners.
There are companies out there selling a chemical product they call a curtain cleaner. Products of this kind contain bleach under another name. Usually hypochlorite. A curtain cleaner it is not. The product will remove the stain and temporally control some of the bacteria that causes mildew on curtains. Mostly this is on the lining but not always. The spores from the mould will still be on the curtain fabric and will recontaminate the lining. It’s similar to a product you would spray on cobblestones. The product can cause damage to fabrics especially if left to dry on the fabric. It can also become active again if allowed to dry on a fabric which is later washed, and in doing so can damage or bleach the colour out of the fabric. The most important point of the claim about these curtain cleaners though, is that it is not a curtain cleaner, but a stain remover and mould killer. To clean a curtain it needs washing or perhaps dry cleaning. All the chemical Curtain Cleaners do is remove the mildew and mildew stain on the patches that it is applied to. It does not remove any other stains, grease, hand creams, oils, dirt, dust, odours, cat and dog rubbings, and hair, fly dirt, insect dirt, water marks and all those other hazards that are part of a curtains life. Facetious claims of stitching coming undone during handling, curtains being damaged, (which is what this product can do), are just that. At Curtain Clean. we take care of your curtains and repair small repairs of that nature. Often once curtains are few years old the stitching can become brittle or just simply rotten in the sun. We resew these as part of our curtain cleaning and restoration process. Many people spend thousands of dollars on curtains and expect specialist advice on cleaning and care of their curtains. For more advice you can look on the Consumers Institue website who have tested some of these cleaners. Curtain Clean.co.nz are those specialists.
